Broad Support for IMO Net-Zero Framework Holds Firm Despite Pushback
Member states have reaffirmed their commitment to the UN shipping agency's compromise decarbonization framework during recent climate discussions.

Member states at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have demonstrated widespread backing for the Net-Zero Framework during a recent meeting focused on the climate impact of global maritime transport. The framework serves as the United Nations shipping body's negotiated compromise agreement designed to address sector emissions.
Following the conclusion of the session, the Clean Shipping Coalition welcomed the broad level of support exhibited by participating governments. The coalition highlighted the importance of sustaining momentum behind the core elements of the negotiated framework as regulatory discussions advance.
However, the proceedings were not without friction. The environmental group criticised attempts by a minority of member states seeking to undermine the established framework by tabling alternative proposals during the deliberations.
As the IMO continues its regulatory work on maritime emissions, the ongoing negotiations around the Net-Zero Framework will remain critical in shaping the operational and environmental obligations facing commercial fleets worldwide.
