Bureau Veritas Grants Approval in Principle for Bluefins Wave-Powered Propulsion System
Classification society approves Bluefins' WaveDrive technology, which harnesses sea waves via a stern-mounted hydrofoil to generate auxiliary thrust.

Classification society Bureau Veritas Marine and Offshore has issued an Approval in Principle to maritime technology firm Bluefins for its WaveDrive propulsion assistance system.
The WaveDrive concept is an auxiliary propulsion system engineered to capture kinetic energy from ocean wave motion. By converting swell dynamics into auxiliary forward thrust, the device aims to reduce fuel consumption on oceangoing vessels.
From a technical standpoint, the design features a hydrofoil apparatus attached to the stern structure of the vessel. The submerged foil interacts with wave patterns during transit to supply supplementary motive force alongside the ship's primary engines.
The granting of the Approval in Principle confirms that the novel propulsion concept meets the fundamental structural and safety appraisal parameters set by Bureau Veritas, enabling further engineering and development of the system.
