LR and MARIC Gain AiP for Tri-Fuel-Ready Tanker Design
A newly approved 114,000 DWT tanker concept is engineered to streamline future retrofits for LNG, methanol, and ammonia.

Classification society Lloyd’s Register and the Marine Design and Research Institute of China have received Approval in Principle for a 114,000 DWT product and crude oil tanker concept developed for future alternative fuel adoption.
The vessel design is prepared to support future conversion to liquefied natural gas, methanol, or ammonia propulsion. By embedding adaptation readiness during the initial architectural stage, the project aims to minimize the structural and operational complexity of subsequent fuel retrofits.
Lloyd’s Register highlighted that factoring multi-fuel adaptability into early-stage designs provides vessel owners with enhanced certainty when directing capital toward long-term fleet development.
The concept was reviewed and approved under Lloyd’s Register’s July 2026 classification rules and regulatory frameworks, incorporating established parameters for vessels utilizing gases and other low-flashpoint marine fuels.
