Maersk to Pilot Anemoi Rotor Sail on 8,700-TEU Container Vessel
A.P. Moller-Maersk is set to evaluate wind-assisted propulsion by fitting a large Rotor Sail from Anemoi Marine Technologies on a container vessel next year.

Danish shipping group A.P. Moller-Maersk is preparing to trial wind-assisted propulsion technology on one of its mainline vessels, outlining plans to install a large mechanical sail on an 8,700-TEU containership.
The installation, scheduled to take place next year, will utilize a Rotor Sail supplied by UK-based technology provider Anemoi Marine Technologies. The project marks a key deployment of modern rotor-based wind propulsion within Maersk's operational container fleet.
Rotor sails harness the Magnus effect to generate aerodynamic thrust from ambient wind, helping to supplement the ship's main propulsion engines and reduce fuel consumption during transit. While the technology has gained traction on dry bulk vessels and tankers, applications on large containerships remain relatively rare due to deck space and cargo handling constraints.
The upcoming trial will allow Maersk to assess the operational integration, performance gains, and overall viability of Anemoi's wind technology under real-world liner operating conditions.
