Wind-assisted propulsion technology developer bound4blue has obtained a formal Design Assessment from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore for its Model 3-24 eSAIL. The regulatory milestone was presented during the SMM maritime trade fair in Hamburg.

The Model 3-24 suction sail has been designed to optimize wind propulsion capabilities for larger merchant ships. Systems within the broader Model 3 portfolio range in height from 24 metres up to 36 metres, featuring an expanded aerodynamic profile and enlarged surface area to harness wind energy more effectively.

The 24-metre version logged its maiden commercial application earlier this year. The unit was installed onboard Klaveness Combination Carriers' newbuild vessel, the MV Baltazar.

Market uptake of the Spanish developer's suction sail systems continues to build, with more than 50 eSAIL units ordered to date. Completed installations have been carried out across 13 commercial vessels.
