Bureau Veritas, CMA CGM and SDARI Partner on AI-Assisted Container Vessel Concept
A new joint development project launched at the SMM trade fair will explore human-centered artificial intelligence and decision-support tools for container shipping.

Classification society Bureau Veritas, French ocean carrier CMA CGM, and the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute have entered into a joint development project to create an artificial intelligence-assisted container ship concept. The initiative was unveiled during the SMM maritime exhibition.
The tripartite agreement focuses on developing advanced decision-support architecture tailored for container vessels. The core design philosophy centers on utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance operational efficiency and navigational safety while ensuring human operators retain ultimate operational control.
Under the scope of the project, the partners will examine how data-driven tools and machine learning algorithms can be integrated into standard vessel systems. The concept seeks to support shipboard personnel during complex navigational situations and optimize onboard workflows.
The collaboration highlights an accelerating trend across the commercial maritime sector to adopt digital technologies and automated systems within structured safety and classification frameworks.
