Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has marked the official start of construction on four new battery-electric tugs ordered by towage and marine services provider Svitzer. The milestone was commemorated with a steel-cutting ceremony held at the Indian shipbuilder's yard.

The project stems from a shipbuilding contract concluded between Svitzer and CSL last December. Under the terms of that agreement, the yard will construct four fully electric vessels based on the TRAnsverse 2600e design, tailored to Svitzer's operational specifications.

Svitzer has designated the newbuild series as highly advanced assets intended to support the objectives of India's Green Tug Transition Programme. The government-backed initiative seeks to advance cleaner port operations and phase in sustainable maritime technologies.

Beyond fleet decarbonisation, the construction programme is designed to cultivate domestic Indian expertise in electric propulsion and complex vessel manufacturing, retaining technical capability within the country's maritime industrial base.
