Maersk and Anemoi Team Up for Container Rotor Sail Retrofit
The 8,850 TEU Maersk Labrea is slated to become the first container vessel fitted with an Anemoi rotor sail.

Wind propulsion technology provider Anemoi and ocean carrier Maersk have entered into an agreement to install a rotor sail on a commercial container vessel, representing a first for the boxship segment.
The installation project will take place aboard the 8,850 TEU Maersk Labrea. Specifications for the unit comprise a fixed cylindrical rotor sail standing 35 metres in height with a diameter of 5 metres.
Deploying mechanical sails on container vessels introduces unique structural and operational challenges compared to standard deck layouts. Project execution requires navigating constrained deck footprints and positioning the unit alongside container bays to maintain adequate wind exposure and aerodynamic efficiency.
The pioneering retrofit forms part of the ongoing assessment of auxiliary wind propulsion systems to assist commercial fleets in lowering operational fuel requirements and emissions.
