Maersk to Pilot Anemoi Rotor Sail in Landmark Container Retrofit
Anemoi Marine Technologies has secured an agreement to deploy a 35-metre rotor sail on an 8,700 TEU Maersk container ship by mid-2027.

Wind propulsion specialist Anemoi Marine Technologies has signed a commercial agreement with Danish shipping major A.P. Moller - Maersk to install a rotor sail on a container vessel. The project marks the initial deployment of Anemoi's mechanical wind-assisted propulsion technology within the container segment.
Under the terms of the deal, Anemoi will design and manufacture a fixed rotor sail standing 35 metres high with a diameter of five metres. The hardware is scheduled to be fitted onto an 8,700 TEU Maersk Lima-class vessel during the middle of 2027.
According to performance estimates provided by Anemoi, individual installations of this type typically reduce fuel consumption by around one tonne per day, generating a concurrent operational emissions cut of approximately three tonnes of carbon dioxide daily per unit.
The deployment will be evaluated under the supervision of Ole Graa Jakobsen, head of fleet technology at Maersk, as carriers assess alternative aerodynamic efficiency measures across diverse vessel types.
