NORDEN Completes First Maritime Emissions Delivery on RSB Book & Claim Registry
Danish dry bulk and tanker operator NORDEN has executed the first verified maritime carbon reductions on the RSB Book & Claim platform in a pilot with Microsoft.

Danish shipping company NORDEN has executed the issuance and transfer of verified maritime greenhouse gas emissions reductions utilizing the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) Book & Claim registry. The transaction represents the first time an ocean carrier has registered and delivered certified maritime emissions reductions through the RSB system.
The project was carried out as part of a pilot initiative involving NORDEN, the RSB, and technology firm Microsoft. Under the collaboration, Microsoft engaged with the platform to account for maritime emissions reductions generated through lower-carbon operational practices.
Book and claim frameworks enable the environmental attributes of low-carbon fuels and operational efficiencies to be decoupled from the physical supply chain. This approach permits cargo owners and corporate partners to purchase and claim certified emissions reductions without requiring their specific shipments to be loaded onto the exact vessels consuming the alternative fuel.
The completion of the pilot highlights the expanding commercial adoption of third-party verified registries to address Scope 3 freight emissions. By establishing standardized accounting mechanisms for maritime transport, industry stakeholders aim to facilitate greater investment into lower-emission maritime solutions.
