Russia Doubles Shadow LNG Fleet to Transport Arctic Cargoes
Vessel-tracking analysis shows a rapid build-up of opaque-ownership gas carriers deployed to service the sanctioned Arctic LNG 2 development.

Russia has doubled the number of opaque-ownership liquefied natural gas carriers dedicated to lifting cargoes from the sanctioned Arctic LNG 2 export terminal over the span of nine months, according to vessel-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.
The specialized shadow fleet supporting the northern project has expanded from an estimated 11 gas carriers to at least 20 vessels. The rapid accumulation of tonnage highlights ongoing efforts to establish export pathways to destination markets in Asia despite international measures targeting the facility.
Among the newly identified fleet additions is a second ice-class carrier engineered to operate through Arctic waters year-round. Specialized ice-capable tonnage is critical for maintaining consistent trading routes through northern sea corridors during winter conditions.
The Arctic LNG 2 project remains constrained by international sanctions, which restrict access to conventional shipping, maritime insurance, and standard logistics services, prompting the establishment of parallel fleet arrangements to sustain operations.
