Industry Stakeholders Launch Pink Corridor Study for Nuclear Containership Route
Lloyd’s Register, Maersk, and port authorities in the US and UK have partnered to assess the regulatory, security, and operational framework for nuclear-powered transatlantic shipping.

Classification society Lloyd’s Register has formed a joint initiative with Danish carrier A.P. Moller – Maersk alongside the Port of Charleston and the Port of Felixstowe to examine the operational demands of nuclear-powered commercial shipping. Titled the Pink Corridor project, the study is focused on assessing the safety, safeguarding, and security measures necessary for atomic-propelled vessels.
The project centers on a theoretical commercial route connecting Charleston in the United States with Felixstowe in the United Kingdom. Both ports will collaborate with the classification society and ocean carrier to analyze the port-side interfaces and security protocols required to accommodate a conceptual nuclear-powered containership.
Key to the research is the development of insights that can help inform upcoming statutory regulations and maritime governance. The partners aim to map out the legal and operational prerequisites for deploying alternative nuclear propulsion systems in transoceanic trades.
According to Lloyd’s Register, the findings are intended to establish foundational practices that support the safe, secure, and regulated integration of nuclear energy across transatlantic commercial trade lanes.
