A new collaborative maritime initiative known as WINTEGRATE has been launched to accelerate the deployment of wind propulsion technology within commercial shipping. Kongsberg Maritime is spearheading the effort alongside a consortium of Norwegian industrial partners and research institutions.

The venture has obtained financial backing of up to NOK 68 million through Norway's Green Platform programme, a government support scheme focused on driving green transition initiatives and research-driven innovation.

WINTEGRATE will concentrate on enhancing the integration of Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) with other shipboard equipment and machinery. By addressing the technical interfaces between wind-harnessing units and comprehensive vessel systems, the project intends to resolve engineering challenges that have hindered broader commercial uptake.

The initiative comes as ship operators and technology providers increasingly examine wind-assisted solutions as viable mechanical options to reduce fuel demand and enhance operational efficiency across the global merchant fleet.
