ABB Selected for Propulsion and Automation Systems on New Cook Strait Rail Ferries
Technology group ABB has been chosen to supply integrated power, propulsion, and automation packages for two upcoming Ro-Pax vessels destined for New Zealand's Cook Strait link.

Technology supplier ABB has secured a contract to deliver comprehensive power, propulsion, and automation systems for two new-generation Ro-Pax ferries intended for service across New Zealand's Cook Strait.
The two newbuilds, to be named Kupe and Cook, are rail-enabled vessels designed to accommodate both passenger and freight transport, reinforcing the strategic maritime connection between the North and South Islands.
Under the scope of the agreement, ABB will provide the integrated technical architecture covering the vessels' power generation, electrical distribution, propulsion machinery, and automation controls.
The project forms a central component of the ongoing modernization program for the Cook Strait ferry service, upgrading transport infrastructure along one of the region's most vital commercial corridors.
