Technology provider ABB has secured a contract to deliver integrated power, propulsion, and automation systems for a pair of new rail-enabled Ro-Pax vessels ordered for service in New Zealand.

The two newbuildings, to be named Kupe and Cook, are being procured as part of the country's Cook Strait Ferry Replacement Programme. The project focuses on renewing fleet assets operating across the strategic domestic maritime corridor.

Chinese shipbuilder Guangzhou Shipyard International has been contracted to construct the two specialized ferries. The construction contract was awarded by New Zealand government entity Ferry Holdings Limited.

Under the equipment supply agreement, ABB will provide the critical propulsion, power management, and automation architecture required to support the operational profile of the new rail-capable vessels.
