Malta-headquartered commodity trading house Alkagesta has detailed its strategic transition toward low-carbon fuels and multi-commodity trading at its annual global town hall in Istanbul, Turkiye. Convening 167 staff members from across its international network, the firm reviewed its 2025 performance against an increasingly complex regulatory framework and volatile energy landscape.

A central focus of the company's forward strategy is the consolidation of its dedicated biofuels desk, established in 2025 to respond to tightening environmental mandates across the maritime sector. The trading house has deepened its footprint across the European biofuels value chain, managing transactions that range from early-stage waste and feedstock collection to the distribution of refined bioproducts including Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

For the marine fuels sector, the expansion provides critical market infrastructure as shipowners face stricter regional and international emissions rules. Alkagesta has structured its operations to connect niche feedstock suppliers and smaller aggregators with industrial refiners and bunker blenders, applying standard risk management, legal, and compliance controls across both single-truck volumes and multi-thousand-tonne seagoing shipments.

According to Anthony Guida, biofuels trader and business developer at Alkagesta, standardising operational and trading practices with local suppliers allows the company to integrate niche volumes into mainstream supply chains while safeguarding physical execution. As one of Europe's leading non-refinery commodity traders, the group is leveraging its logistics and derivatives capabilities to provide scalable alternatives to conventional marine bunker products.

Beyond renewable fuels, the firm's leadership highlighted significant portfolio diversification delivered over the past year. In dry commodities, Alkagesta formally entered the metals sector through steel trading, supplementing its established presence in fertilizer trading platforms in regions such as Egypt.

The group also extended its liquid trading capabilities, establishing a light ends naphtha book with an inaugural Long Range tanker voyage from the Mediterranean to the Far East. In conventional energy flows, Alkagesta marked a major milestone in West Africa by executing an export cargo of 130,000 metric tonnes of fuel oil from Nigeria.

Orkhan Rustamov, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Alkagesta, stated at the town hall that disciplined execution, alignment, and robust risk frameworks remain vital as the organisation scales globally. The company aims to continue expanding its dual presence in transitional marine fuels and diversified physical commodities.
