Geologic Hydrogen Exploration Accelerates Across Multiple Continents
Exploration programs in North America and Australia are targeting naturally occurring hydrogen deposits as a prospective low-carbon energy source.

Exploration for naturally occurring geologic hydrogen is gathering pace as scientists and commercial start-ups pursue subsurface resources to support the ongoing global energy transition.
Active field research and mapping operations are currently concentrated across three main regions, with initiatives taking place in the United States, Canada, and Australia. These programs aim to delineate underground reservoirs containing naturally accumulated deposits.
Commonly referred to as white hydrogen, the commodity differs fundamentally from green hydrogen in its supply method. Rather than relying on industrial electrolysis powered by renewable electricity, white hydrogen would be directly extracted and mined from natural subterranean formations.
A series of major resource discoveries in recent months has bolstered industry expectations, accelerating efforts to establish the commercial viability of direct underground hydrogen extraction.
