Worldwide container fleet capacity is on track to set a new operational record, crossing the 34 million TEU threshold on the back of continuous newbuilding deliveries and minimal vessel demolition.

According to data from shipping association BIMCO, the global fleet stood just 8,000 TEU short of the milestone at the beginning of September.

Capacity growth remains well supported in the near term, with shipbuilders scheduled to hand over 46 containerships representing a combined total of 286,000 TEU.

The influx of fresh tonnage paired with sustained low levels of vessel recycling activity continues to drive the overall expansion of the global container fleet to unprecedented levels.
