Hanwha Ocean Secures ABS Approval for Ammonia-Ready Fuel System Design
American Bureau of Shipping grants approval in principle for a multi-purpose fuel tank and supply architecture enabling gas carriers to convert to ammonia without hardware replacement.
South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has obtained an Approval in Principle from classification society American Bureau of Shipping for a novel fuel containment and handling design intended for gas carriers.
The certified solution features a multi-purpose fuel tank integrated with a dedicated fuel gas supply system. The engineering layout is designed to allow a liquefied natural gas carrier to shift its operational fuel consumption from LNG to ammonia.
A central operational feature of the concept is the elimination of major structural and mechanical replacements during future fuel conversions. Under the validated framework, vessels can undergo the transition to ammonia without replacing either the installed bunker storage tanks or the primary fuel gas supply equipment.
The verification by the classification society confirms the foundational technical feasibility of the system, addressing conversion pathways as maritime operators evaluate the long-term adoption of alternative bunker fuels across global shipping fleets.
